Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane filtration process where forces such as pressure or concentration gradients cause separation through a semipermeable membrane. In this process, suspended solids and solutes of high molecular weight are retained in the retentate, while water and low molecular weight solutes pass through the membrane to form the permeate (filtrate). UF is commonly used in industry and research to purify and concentrate macromolecular solutions, such as protein solutions.
Ultrafiltration is similar to microfiltration in that both methods use size exclusion or particle capture for separation. However, it differs from membrane gas separation, which relies on varying absorption rates and diffusion rates. Ultrafiltration membranes are characterized by their molecular weight cut-off (MWCO). The process can be applied in either cross-flow or dead-end mode.
